After a few moments scanning, Abbi let the hand holding the papers drop to her side and shifted her focus to me. Eyes narrowing, she tapped the papers against her thigh nervously. Even angry, she was beautiful to me, beautifully intimidating. Abbi clearly held the power now.

“I guess I need to sign those,” I said in a pitiful tone. I wasn’t to the point of groveling, but I was close. “Let’s get this process under way. By the time I’m outta here, it’ll all be official and you can move on.”

“Just stop!” she said, her voice quick and sharp. “I don’t feel a bit sorry for you, Nick, so don’t say a word!” Both of Abbi’s hands were now planted firmly on her hips, one fist clutching the papers, crunching them. “Before we take another step, you need to understand something!”

“I think I understand, Abbi,” I said. “You made it crystal clear on the papers you served.”

“No, I don’t think you do,” said Abbi. “You’re a selfish coward! Everything is about you. It’s always about you! You’ll never know how deeply you hurt me—hurt this family, what’s left of it. Did Carlee even tell you that she was engaged?”

“Because now, after this latest media fiasco involving her father, the great Nick Gregory, her fiancé backed out—told Carlee he couldn’t handle it, that the timing wasn’t right. She’s devastated!”

Closing my eyes, I banged my head back against the pillow, loathing myself. “I don’t deserve you guys,” I said. “I’m just a dead dog.”

“Would you stop it already with the ‘dead dog’ bit?” Abbi said, a raw edge to her voice. “Why do you keep saying that? Does it have anything to do with Deuce? I told you, he didn’t die.”

“It has to do with me hating myself right now.”

“Hating yourself? Well, how do you like the sound of this?” she continued, glaring at me. “Deuce lived and you’re going to live, too, Nick. I’m going to make sure of that! Carlee needs a father who loves her more than he loves himself, and if she ever does get married, her babies are going to need a grandfather!” Abbi glanced down at the papers she was clutching in her hand. “Oh, you’re going to live, all right! You’re not dying on us after all we’ve been through.” Then suddenly, as if torn herself, she cried out, “God, help me!” and ripped the papers in half, letting the pieces fall to the floor.

My breath stopped and a lump formed in my throat. Did I just see what I thought I saw? I lay there stunned, staring at Abbi. Is the medication causing an illusion? Yet the torn-up divorce papers were strewn all over the hospital room floor. Abbi was still standing there, foot tapping, arms crossed over her chest. She wasn’t crying. She wasn’t smiling.

Finally, words stammered out of my mouth. “Wha .
